StagecraftUK is the in-house venue technical services team at Telford International Centre comprising project management, rigging, electrics, conference and exhibition support, warehousing and logistics. The latter being run by our team of event crew comprising of six crew members, in addition to two warehouse crew and two managers.
The event crew team is the vital moving part to our flexible venue. With no fixed fittings, and bespoke layouts according to each event brief, this role is the one to move and set furniture, draping, seating and staging. In the region of one hundred and forty events annually, this is a busy job with high demands on customer service; facilitating build and break downs of the events; interpreting floorplans; respecting health and safety and working round the clock!
Ben Sale, Crew Member at Stagecraftuk, shares his career journey from work experience placement to a permanent, full-time member of the team.
How did you hear about the role with Stagecraftuk and what made you want to join Telford International Centre?
I first heard about Stagecraftuk through the work experience programme at college in 2023. The role appealed to me as it offered career progression and the chance to learn lots of new skills. Over the course of three months, I completed two hundred hours of work experience. I was then approached by Stagecraftuk to join the team as a part-time apprentice on their in-house training scheme.
What skills have you learnt since joining the team at Stagecraftuk?
Since joining the team, I have learnt how to set up our halls and event spaces for exhibitions and conferences to a professional level. This involves setting up for gala dinners and breakout rooms as well as arranging seating banks, stages and flat floors. I have also had the chance to learn and develop in other Stagecraftuk services, such as Rigging and Electrics, which has given me a good understanding of the wider offer of integrated venue event production.
What do you enjoy most about your current role?
I enjoy being able to see an issue an exhibitor/client is having, and offering multiple solutions that I believe will benefit them. It gives me a sense of relief and pride that I’ve helped when needed. I also enjoy being able to work in a team, whether it’s for something simple like stacking a room, or something more complex, being a part of a team is always helpful.
What has been your greatest achievement since joining Stagecraftuk?
I believe my greatest achievement since joining Stagecraftuk has been qualifying for my IPAF (The International Powered Access Federation) Licence. This enables me to drive a scissor lift or cherry picker and allows me to hang drapes, star cloth and various types of cables needed for an event.
Commenting on his recent promotion to full-time Crew Member, Richard Heawood, Ben’s Line Manager says:“Ben has made significant progress since joining the Stagecraftuk team in July 2023. He has continued to excel and has grown his work and communication skills to the point where at the end of 2024 we offered him a full-time position which he started in January 2025. Ben is now an integral part of Stagecraftuk, and we look forward to the future with him on our team.”
